ScopeX 2002 - Telescope and Astronomical Exhibition
The Johannesburg centre of ASSA held a Telescope and Astronomical Exhibition at the SA Military History Museum in Saxonwold, Johannesburg, on 18 May 2002.
The event was attended by some 1200 members of the public (the biggest turnout ever of paying visitors for an event at the Museum) who thoroughly enjoyed the exhibits of self-made and commercial telescopes and the presentations on topics such as SALT (by Case Rijsdijk of SAAO), Radio Astronomy (by Sarah Buchner of HARTAO) and Galaxies (by Dr Barbara Cunow of UNISA). One of the special exhibits on display was a model of SALT, courtesy of SAAO.
All the comments heard were very positive and some of the people were completely blown away when getting a chance to look through the telescopes at the 'star party'.
The event will be held annually.
